First and foremost, I do hope this holiday season has proven to be merry. After a wild six months, I can’t help feeling optimistic about the start of a new year! This past semester has been quite an adjustment for me — but when is transferring schools not totally crazy?
Unfortunately, I am spending my New Year’s Eve curled up on the couch due to a nasty cold. Luckily, though, this has given me time to reflect on a year that has proven to be emotionally, mentally, and spiritually draining for so many of us. In short, I am realizing there are a few habits we all should leave in 2017. They are as follows:
1. Regular All-Nighters:
To my college friends: you can’t tell me you’re not guilty of this one. If you don’t stay up all night regularly, at the very least, you deprive yourself of an adequate amount of sleep. Personally, I’m guilty of bringing an unhealthy amount of coffee with me into the library as I work frantically to ensure my writing assignments are on fleek. The results of these late nights include irritability, raccoon-like eyes, and missed typos in my papers. Yikes.
2. Coffee VS. Water
Say it with me: coffee and water are not interchangeable. When you’re on the go constantly, sometimes it seems like you have to choose one beverage on your way out the door. In 2018, let’s reach for water more often.
3. Coffee VS. Breakfast
4. Unnecessary Apologies
Once, I heard one of my role models say to avoid apologizing unless you’ve done something really bad. This seems extreme, but here’s my takeaway: don’t apologize for your feelings. If you have set boundaries, people should respect them, and you shouldn’t be sorry. If you feel stressed, then you feel stressed, and you shouldn’t be sorry. If you feel sad because the caf isn’t serving mac and cheese, then you feel sad because the caf isn’t serving mac and cheese, and you shouldn’t be sorry (that one may just be me).
This year was full of both trials and triumphs, but I do want to share with you some of my favorite memories from 2017. Cheers to a new year full of friends, family, love, and adventure!
